KC, originally from Chicago's south side Princeton Park community (now living in Las Vegas) is dedicated to bringing attention to illiteracy. The Hang'n with Kasey series is designed to appeal to all children, especially those in urban areas. This series was created with the intent to promote fathers taking an active role in their child's lives, outdoor activity, and ultimately for children to enjoy reading and to begin to view it as entertaining, not as a chore or a part of school or study. A person's reading & comprehension levels have a DIRECT IMPACT ON ONE'S QUALITY OF LIFE... and KC wants to be in the forefront of reading promotion for all children.
Executive Summary for Karl "KC" Christon, Author & Creator of the Hang'n with Kasey book series and CEO of Kasey & Co.
The main goal that KC has is to help children make reading a priority in their lives and understand the importance of being a good reader.
The research that was done clearly shows a growing trend; reading is taking a backseat in the lives of America's young people at an alarming rate. There is a plethora of evidence that shows a direct link to a person's quality of life based on their ability to read. For example: Approximately 50 percent of the nation's unemployed youth, ages 16-21, are functional illiterates, with virtually no prospects of obtaining good jobs. - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
More than three out of four of those are on welfare, 85% of unwed mothers, and 68% of those arrested are illiterate. About three in five of America's prison inmates are illiterate. -Washington Literacy Council
Fortunately, this is a problem that CAN be fixed. For decades, organizations such as RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) and educational institutions have encouraged reading with children fifteen minutes each day. The facts are that if a child reads fifteen minutes each day they will not only improve their vocabulary and be a better reader through word recognition, but also grasp the meaning of what was read and at the very least be functionally literate. “Out-of-school reading habits of students have shown that even 15 minutes a day of independent reading can expose students to more than a million words of text in a year.” -Anderson, Wilson, & Fielding, 1988
I believe I can be successful in reaching my goal by not only providing a product that will captivate the reader, be it an adult or a child, but also allow the young reader to be able to see characters that they are able to identify with as well as identify with the author which I believe to be crucial in the success of an Art form. Take the case with Hip-Hop/Pop music. It is so successful in monetary terms, and is so influential because the listener, especially young consumers, can directly identify with the content and the artist, which is one of the main reasons Fat Albert & The Cosby Kids television cartoon show aired over 100 episodes from 1972 through 1985.
The initial start up expense for the Hang'n with Kasey book series is funded entirely by Karl Christon at this time. Capital funds are used to develop the illustrations, employ a print on demand service, construct a website, and any travel and unexpected expenses incurred.
The first year of operations are looking to have a 50% increase in sales with our immediate marketing strategy, utilizing social medias such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. to advertise and promote Hang'n with Kasey . We will use the profit to develop a cartoon based on the Hang'n with Kasey book series. The cartoon's content will consist of helping young children learn basics, not only in simple arithmetic, but letter and word recognition, help with developing manners, learning the importance of being obedient and the importance of keeping oneself healthy.
In the near future, KC intends to start a non-profit foundation that will provide assistance to inner-city schools and organizations. The intent will be to help underscore the importance of literacy. KC will also make himself available to speak with children directly at schools and youth centers to encourage reading and express the importance of academics and positive thinking.Any questions or comments can be addressed to KC at firstname.lastname@example.org or 702.403.5530.
